Description
Pentateuch, written on a parchment scroll
Sefer Torah is so sacred for Jews that there are special rules for its writing, the violation of which makes it unsuitable for public reading in the synagogue. They write it on strips of parchment made from the skin of “pure” animals. The veins of the same animals sew strips into one long scroll, attached on both sides to the handles on which it is wound. Special rules apply even to ink used to write text. Read the scroll, rewinding it from the left handles to the right.
Since the text of the Torah is canonized, any error in the text must be corrected, otherwise, such a scroll cannot be used. The error in the Name of the Most High is not corrected. A defective or obsolete scroll should be disposed of in a special way, usually buried in the ground. Our Torah scrolls are miniatures of the original Torah scrolls used in synagogues. Unlike the original scrolls, they are printed on paper.
