Description

We light up candles pleasure of celebrating Saturday and Holidays is directly connected with the light in the house. This is one of the reasons why candles are lit before Shabbat and Yom Tov (Biblical Holidays). Jewish sages provide three explanations regarding the candle lighting commandment:

  1. The reverence of the Sabbath. By lighting candles in the house, we show our respect for the holy day. After all, during joyful events, people usually light candles and put them on the table.
  2. Enjoying the Sabbath. Saturday’s pleasure is multiplied if during the meal there is a candle on the table that allows you to see the food well.
  3. Peace and tranquility in the house. In a well-lit dwelling, you can safely walk without fear of stumbling. In accordance with this explanation, we should oblige ourselves to light candles in all rooms of the house, or at least leave the lighting in all parts of the house or leave the inner doors open so that the dark rooms are illuminated through open doors.

At least two candles are lit on Sabbath – one to fulfill the commandment of remembering the Sabbath, another to fulfill the commandment of keeping the Sabbath. There is also tradition to light up one candle per each family member.

Pomegranate is one of the seven species of the Land of Israel mentioned in the Bible along with Wheat, Barley, Dates, Pomegranate, Fig, Grapes and Olive (Deuteronomy 8:8).
