Description

Shofar is an ancient musical instrument traditionally made from ram’s horn, but can also be seen made from mountain goat, kudu, oryx, etc. horns. The word shofar and the name of mountain ram are the same root word in Semitic languages. The first mentioning of the shofar sound is encountered in the story of Sinai revelation (Exodus 19:16). There was also a tradition of announcing the beginning of a jubilee year with shofar sounds (Leviticus 25:9, 10). Shofar is a mandatory attribute of the celebration of Rosh-ha-Shana, the Jewish New Year. This is why another name of Rosh-ha-Shana in Torah is “yom teruah” or “day of trumpeting” (Numbers 29:1). Apparently, it was customary in the Biblical era customary to combine the sounds of the shofar with playing other musical instruments — trumpets, flutes, etc. (Ps. 95: 6). During mass processions, the horn was trumpeting, convening citizens (Joshua 6: 4, 12; II Sam. 15:10), sometimes the shofar announced the start of hostilities (Judg. 3:27). In the late Temple period shofar was predominantly blown inside the Temple, but after the destruction of Temple Jews started blowing shofars in synagogues during Rosh-Ha-Shana and Yom Kippur prayers.
