Savivon, or Dreidl in Yiddish, is a spinning top, usually square at the top (but can also be round), four sides of which contain letters of Hebrew alphabet: נ — noon, ג — gimmel, ה — hey, ש — shin and refer to the Great Miracle of Hanukkah. They are initial letter of the words “Nes Gadol haya sham”, which means “The Great Miracle Happened There”.

The custom of playing Savivon arose during the period of Greek rule, when Jews were forbidden to study the Torah and to obey the commandments. The Jews did it underground, and when enemies appeared, they pretended that they did not come together to study the Torah, but to play a game using Savivon. There is also another explanation of this custom – letting children play Savivon in order not to let them fall asleep and to attend the ignition of Hanukkah candles.
