Description

In general Byzantine coins are very similar to their predecessors Roman coins. Throughout Rome and later Byzantine history, the emperors used coin minting as an effective mean of propagating their political power. This propaganda often consisted of military, social or religious propaganda as well as their combination. The religious propaganda in particular was a very effective way to get people’s support because they were already very religious and there was only need to take another step to understand and to believe the message delivered through the coin.

As the political and religious climate of the Byzantine Empire changed over time, also changed the propaganda delivered through the coins. Religious images or their absence on the coins for a given period of time can be used to study the religious and political atmosphere at the time.

The obverse side of this kind of a coin depicts a portrait of Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II facing right. The reverse side depicts a cross in the center. Coin is dated approximately 408-450 A.D.
